Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure that is used to enhance the appearance and functionality of the nose. It is a highly individualized procedure, and no two surgeries are exactly alike. The procedure can involve the reshaping of the bone or cartilage inside the nose, or the addition of volume using fillers or fat grafts. Your surgeon will evaluate your specific needs and explain in detail what your surgery will entail.

There are two general techniques used for making the incisions during nose surgery: 

1. The open technique involves making incisions on the outside of the nose with a small incision to the underside of the nose, between the nostrils. Am I Suitable for a Nose Job Abroad?

If you are reading this, you may have been considering a nose job for a long time, (especially if you are concerned about how your nose is shaped, rather than an accident that’s caused the problem). In both circumstances, there is no reason why you wouldn’t be suitable, providing you have realistic expectations, are in generally good health and over the age of 18.

A nose job can usually be performed as an outpatient, so there is usually no need for an overnight stay in the hospital. Nevertheless, you will not be able to drive after the procedure, so do ensure you have someone pick you up afterward (this can be a private driver or service arranged through Medical Departures if you are traveling alone). It is also advisable to have someone stay with you overnight.

After surgery, you may be instructed to wear a nasal splint, which provides support for your nose while it heals, as well as protecting it from bumps, and while you sleep. Your nasal passes are also likely to be packed with dressings, which act as a splint and keep the airway free from crusting. 

Swelling and bruising will be likely around the nose, eyes and face. Some cold presses may help to reduce this and to minimize discomfort. You will need to keep your head elevated as much as you can over the following days; this includes when sleeping (as it will help to reduce swelling).

You will be advised to limit your activities for a few weeks, including blowing your nose, and being gentle when performing routine activities, such as cleaning your teeth, wearing glasses or even strenuous facial expressions. Gradually, any discomfort will subside and you’ll find it easier to go about your everyday business. It will be around six weeks before you can engage in any strenuous or vigorous activity, such as sports.
