The butt implant procedure takes between one and two hours. A general anesthetic is administered and small incisions are made in the natural creases of the buttocks, below the large gluteal muscle. The implants are inserted through these incisions, which are then stitched closed to heal.

Sometimes the procedure is performed with a combination with a fat transfer where fat is removed by liposuction from one part of the body and injected into the buttocks, which is said to give a more natural appearance. You may see this referred to as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).
