Although Botox and dermal fillers are both administered via injection and primarily treat age-related cosmetic problems, that really is where the similarity ends.

Dermal fillers are substances designed to add fullness and volume beneath the skin’s surface, thereby filling in wrinkles, whereas Botox paralyses muscles beneath wrinkles preventing them from forming.

Dermal fillers are used on “static” wrinkles (those that you can see all the time), whereas Botox is designed for use on “active” wrinkles (those that are formed over time by expressions, such as frown lines).

It is true that active wrinkles do eventually become static wrinkles, so if you haven’t tried Botox to tackle your active wrinkles, you can always opt for dermal fillers instead.

The most popular dermal fillers in use today include hyaluronic acid (HA) as the main active ingredient. HA is found naturally in our bodies and is able to hold more than 1,000 times its weight in water. When we are born, we have an abundance of HA, which is why a baby’s skin is so peachy-looking. However, our natural HA concentration depletes as we age, with production dropping off dramatically in our mid-40s.

As HA is found naturally in our body, dermal fillers containing it are generally very safe. They are non-permanent, degrading naturally over time, and if you don’t like the effect, they can easily be dissolved with a hyaluronidase injection.

There are other, permanent fillers, some of which contain plastic microspheres. However, if you don’t like the effect of these, or something goes wrong, you cannot change them; this is why most people stick to temporary HA fillers.

Most people are suitable for dermal fillers, although the treatment is not advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
