Turkey Hair Transplant Prices vs the UK

As shown above, on average, a hair transplant in Turkey costs between £1,000 and £4,000, depending on the number of grafts required. This is approximately two-thirds less than respective hair transplant prices in the UK.

In general, patients can expect to make savings of between 50-70% in Turkey compared to the same treatment back home, which is notoriously expensive in the UK (especially the cost of hair transplants in London) and not covered by the NHS.

Variation in Price by Technique

Patients can typically expect to pay slightly more for the more popular FUE technique in Turkey—or anywhere else in the world for that matter—compared to FUT procedures. (Note: these methods and others are explained in detail further down this page).

Likewise, other techniques, such as sapphire FUE or the semi-automated NeoGraft® method, will likely cost more.

Please use the tables provided above to get a rough idea as to how much your FUE hair transplant in Turkey will cost or get in touch with a member of the Medical Departures Customer Care Team.

For example, if you are seeking the cost of 5000 grafts for your hair transplant in Turkey, we will be able to provide you with a personalized price quote depending on your treatment and clinic preferences, as well as your stage of hair loss.

What About Hidden Costs? What Factors Will Determine the Final Cost?

When getting a price quote from our team, there are no hidden costs or extra administrative fees to worry about.

It should be noted that any price quote provided online or over the phone will be based on an estimation of how many grafts you need; this provisional information can be obtained by a hair transplant surgeon by referring to a classification system that determines the extent of male pattern baldness, such as the Norwood scale. (More information below).

Your stage of hair loss (and subsequent number of grafts required) is the main determining factor when it comes to price. Patients flying to Turkey for their new head of hair should also consider:

-The reputation of the clinic and surgeon

-The clinic location—is it situated in the business district of Istanbul or by the beach in Antalya—or is it a long drive out in the suburbs?

-The type of method used

-The number of sessions required to transfer all of the grafts—one is typically sufficient if you are balding in one area, while multiple may be needed for more extensive hair loss

Other Medical Tourism Cost Factors:

-Duration of your stay in Turkey

-Type of accommodation—Istanbul, for example, has decent budget rooms from as little as £30… all the way up to several hundred for five-star stays.

-Flights—you can save as much as 90% if you’re flexible when it comes to dates, the airline and additional fees (seating, baggage, meals, etc).

-Leisure time—are you traveling for medical purposes only, or would you be tempted to squeeze in a holiday before the procedure?

Why Choose Turkey for a Hair Transplant?

As well as the substantial cost savings as we’ve outlined above, there is a handful of other reasons to choose Turkey for your hair transplant:

Quality Results: Dated hair plug techniques are a thing of the past; no longer will everyone in the room know you’ve sought “medical intervention” after you’ve visited one of our fully background-checked, experienced doctors in Turkey.

In fact, the country’s most-visited city of Istanbul has slowly gained a reputation as being the “hair transplant capital of the world,” which draws in the very best Turkish surgeons who have often completed training abroad and hold professional memberships with well-established associations such as the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

Adept in applying the very latest techniques coupled with state-of-the-art equipment, patients booking through our site can look forward to natural-looking results, as well as quick, pain-free treatment in comfortable clinics that are dedicated to welcoming international patients.

A Thriving Medical Tourism Destination: Turkey boasts world-class hospitals, medical networks and clinics that cater to the specific needs of international patients. Those listed on our site are contemporary, high-tech and staffed by skilled doctors with years of experience in their respective fields.

As well as being popular for hair implants, patients from across the UK, EU, Middle East and even North America are flooding into the country to take advantage of low costs on procedures such as breast augmentation, rhinoplasty (nose jobs), liposuction, eye bag removal, arm lifts, weight-loss surgery, orthopedic surgery and holistic regenerative treatments to fend off the signs of aging.

Privacy: If you’re losing your locks and self-conscious about it, going to Turkey for your treatment promises a degree of privacy that you wouldn’t necessarily get at home.

Following treatment, you’ll want to spend around a week taking things easy, allowing incisions to heal and your newly transplanted hair to settle; Turkey is the perfect place where you can do this away from the rest of the world’s prying eyes… but do make sure you pack a loose hat!

Chance for a Holiday: You can make the most of your time away in Turkey while enjoying a well-earned holiday or city break.

And whether you are seeking a beach break in Antalya or want to see the world-renowned sites of Istanbul nestled between the edge of Europe and Asia, we have gathered a growing range of partner clinics across the country to suit your needs.

Why Is it Cheaper Compared to the UK and North Europe?

The main reason to explain the more affordable hair transplant prices in Turkey is the country's overall cost of living. This has an effect on:

  • How much money Turkish doctors, nurses and other support staff make
  • The costs involved in running a business, such as utilities, renting office space or buying a property
  • The amount of money it costs doctors to go through years of medical school at university, which is a fraction of the price to institutions of the same level in the UK or US.

These factors result in lower business overheads; in turn making it possible for Turkish hospitals and clinics to charge up to 70% less than in the UK, EU or US while still using the same high-quality diagnostic and surgical equipment as some of the best hospitals abroad.

Is it Safe to Get a Hair Transplant in Turkey?

All medical treatments carry some degree of risk—in fact, even in your home country, hair transplant success rates may be slightly lower at certain clinics when compared with the top medical centers in Turkey.

That said, hair transplants on the whole are extremely safe nowadays: local (instead of general) anesthesia is used to numb the area, the use of which is normally the biggest risk factor for any medical procedure.

With optimized techniques, sterilisation protocols and improved aftercare at our partner clinics, hair transplants are becoming safer all the time.

Note: Similar to any medical procedure, side effects to look out for include prolonged bleeding, infection and allergic reactions. Consult your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms.

Traveling to Turkey as a Medical Tourist

Note: For more comprehensive information about visiting Turkey for hair transplants or any other cosmetic or medical procedure, visit our Ultimate Guide to Doctors in Turkey.

For reference:

Although Turkey may be the ancient cradle of civilization, it is also a modern country with robust, well-established healthcare facilities on par with other countries in Europe and across the world.

Some of the world’s leading hair transplant surgeons can be found in the major cities of this Eurasian country, including Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir and the capital of Ankara.

How Do I Get to Turkey? Can I Fly?

The best way to get to Turkey from the UK, US or Europe is to fly. Hundreds of flights carry UK travellers to Turkey every week, with non-stops available to Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir and the capital of Ankara.

The average flight time to Istanbul is approximately four hours.

Flights depart UK airports in London, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Belfast, among other cities.

How Much Do Flights to Turkey Cost from the UK?

This will depend on the time of year, how long you book in advance and whether you decide to go with a budget carrier (like Ryanair) or a national carrier (like British Airways).

At the time of writing (via Skyscanner):

On average, return flights from London to Istanbul cost between GBP 100–150.

Return flights from London to Antalya cost between GBP 100–200.Note: In terms of regular entry requirements, British nationals can stay in the country visa-free for up to 90 days.

Check the latest (and ever-changing) entry requirements for Turkey on the official Gov.uk page.

Where to Stay in Turkey

In terms of destinations, our top hair transplant clinics in Turkey are located in Istanbul, as well as the popular coastal city of Antalya. Both of these locations offer a huge choice of hotels, resorts, serviced apartments, private houses (especially on Airbnb), villas, boutique hotels and inexpensive hostels.

The best hotel for you should be one relatively close to your chosen clinic or hospital, as you will need to return for a post-op appointment one or two days after your procedure.

What Is a Hair Transplant?

Ultimate Guide to Hair Transplants Abroad.

For reference:

The term hair transplant refers to any procedure that moves (or “transplants”) hair from one area of the body to another; typically, this involves harvesting individual follicles or strips from an area on the head where there is sufficient growth to another area where the hair is thinning or balding.

Credit: Tanya Lovus/Shutterstock.com

What Are the Different Hair Transplant Methods in Turkey?

The two most common and effective hair transplant methods are FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplant). We review these in greater detail below, as well as DHI (direct hair implantation), an innovative modification of the FUE technique.

FUE Hair Transplant in Turkey

Follicular unit extraction (abbreviated to FUE) is a minimally invasive procedure that permanently restores the hair in places where it is thinning or balding, normally on the head.

An FUE hair transplant simply involves moving grafts from a donor area of the body to the recipient area, normally the top and front of the scalp. A graft consists of a single follicle, typically composed of groups of 1-4 hairs.

The most common donor regions are the back and sides of the scalp, as the hairs here are less susceptible to patterned hair loss. This is because these hairs are much more resistant to the hormones believed to cause balding in the first place.

During the FUE procedure, the specialist surgeon may transplant anywhere between 500 and 6,000 grafts; this depends mostly on the degree and pattern of existing hair loss, which is determined by the Norwood Scale (as we detail further down this page).

Note: Some clinics may also offer the “sapphire FUE technique,” whereby specialist sapphire blades are used, rather than steel. Following the same method, these sharper, smoother and more durable sapphire blades allow the surgeon to create smaller, more precise incisions in the scalp.

Advantages of the FUE technique:

-The FUE method has high success rates

-Faster recovery than FUT

-No scarring

-Long-lasting results

-Minimally invasive and virtually painless procedure thanks to local anaesthesia

FUT Hair Transplant in Turkey

Also known as strip harvesting, a follicular unit transplant involves small groups of grafts harvested around the entire scalp, then implanted into the required area where there is hair loss.

Unlike an FUE, this more invasive technique requires a strip of skin (along with the harvested grafts) to be removed, thus leaving a scar at the back of the scalp.

Advantages of FUT:

-A quicker, often more efficient option for patients with advanced hair loss wanting to cover a large patch.

-As each of the follicular grafts comprises 1-4 strands of hair, the FUT method can yield fuller, more natural-looking results.

-Generally the least expensive method.

-Can be followed by FUE treatment in the future, but not vice versa.

DHI Hair Transplant in Turkey

The direct hair transplant method is similar to a follicular unit extraction (FUE) in that individual grafts are harvested from a donor site—usually the back of the head—and implanted into the balding recipient area.

The method differs in the way in which the grafts are transferred to the recipient area: whereas a surgeon will manually transfer the extracted grafts one by one, the DHI method uses a specialised implantation tool called a Choi Implanter Pen.

A DHI also does not require canal openings on the scalp prior to embedding the grafts.

Advantages of DHI:

  • Non-invasive and painless (during the procedure), as local anaesthesia is used.
  • No need to shave the recipient area following treatment.
  • The implant pen can manage different types of follicles (larger or smaller in diameter), thus allowing more control over hair density.
  • It is said to have better precision and accuracy than the manual FUE method.
  • The wound is smaller compared to using a scalper; like the FUE method, there is no scarring.

Which Hair Transplant Method Is the Right for Me?

The method best for you will largely depend on your current hair situation, as well as your budget and personal preferences. In general:

-FUE is normally the best option for patients with short hair who are in the early stages of hair loss, thus not requiring a major transplant procedure. It is minimally invasive, has a quicker recovery time and leaves no scarring.

-FUT is often more suitable for those who prefer a longer hairstyle or need more extensive grafting in order to cover a larger balding area.

-DHI might be a good alternative to the FUE method, especially if you are seeking greater control over hair density. However, not all clinics offer this technology and it may well be the most expensive option.

How Many Grafts Would I Need?

To determine how many grafts you would need in Turkey, the Norwood scale would be applied for reference, as shown below:

The Norwood scale is the leading classification system used to determine the extent of male pattern baldness, thus allowing medical teams to get a clear indication as to how many grafts are needed.

The scale is composed of seven main classification stages, from “slight hair loss or recession of the hairline” (Stage IIa) through to “severe hair loss, where only a small band of hair around the sides remains” (Stage VII).

Each different stage corresponds to an estimated range of hair grafts required to restore a patient’s full head of hair.

Transplanting Hair to Other Body Parts

The above-described techniques can be applied to other areas of the body, aside from the scalp. Clinics in Turkey also offer:

  • Beard transplants
  • Moustache and goatee transplants
  • Sideburn transplants
  • Eyebrow transplants

How Long Does it Take for My Hair to Grow After a Transplant?

After three months, patients can expect to see some positive results, with many seeing almost half of their hair back after six months.

Hair grows at around 1.3 cm per month, and so patients will see the bulk of their hair develop from month-5 and month-12 following surgery. Thickness and texture may continue to improve up to the 18-month mark.

The table below shows expected hair growth outcomes:

From the moment I arrived on my first visit, the service has been impeccable. However, one minor issue was the temperature of the air conditioning, which I found to be a little too chilly for my liking.
