We searched the internet for Stem Cell treatments & locations and found Giostar. We decided to pursue treatment. (*We have tips down below if you're considering traveling to and staying with Giostar.) Giostar staff Luis efficiently set us up for treatment. He politely answered all of our questions and eased any of our reservations. He considered every aspect of the arrangements and everything went exactly as stated (dates, hotel reservations, treatment schedules, cost and supports.) Cristina, at the front Giostar desk, kindly welcomed us, which alleviated our initial anxiousness. Dr. Daniel Garza was thorough and considered all aspects of our situation, treatment and checked-in frequently. Nurse Jesus and his students were incredibly comforting, gentle, kind, funny and knowledgeable. Jesus is very skilled with the IV and the hyperbaric chamber treatments. PT Karolina is not only a fantastic Physical Therapist but she also recognizes the whole-person approach and considers all aspects of the person's lifestyle and well-being. She seeks out new ways to support, coordinates with the other specialists and ALWAYS follows up with us! Nutritionist Freda has a rich knowledge of the diet and offered so many helpful health tips, recipes and consults! Patient Care Coordinator Isa puts the whole package together and ensured we had a comfortable stay, that we were well-informed, managed our treatment schedule and anything and everything else we needed. She was kind and calmly efficient (like a ninja.) The stem cell treatments were much less intrusive than we imagined they might be. Dr. Filipe made the process very comfortable and painless. The Giostar team accommodated every single one of our needs, in a non-rushed, non-inconvenienced and in a not at all pushy manner! Together, they built a tremendous treatment plan and they offered to stay in contact every week afterwards, via zoom, to check our status, to offer additional supports and answer any questions we have (at no extra cost.) These specialists feel like family to us. Nobody promised us anything, neither a cure nor symptom improvement. Living with ALS requires a certain level of positive thinking. After 3 weeks, we have experienced some reduced symptoms and have a more positive outlook on life. *We drove in on an early Sunday evening which only took us a few minutes to cross the border into Mexico. When entering Los Algodones, we did not need to show a passport BUT we did need to show it, on our return, to re-enter the states. When leaving Mexico on Saturday around noon, it took us about an hour. We saw a multi-mile long line of vehicles, coming into Mexico, which had to have been a 3 - 4 hour wait. Giostar offers two hotel options: Cielo Lindo (where we stayed) is on the 2nd floor and there are no elevators. Parking is in the basement, which is nicely maintained & costs $2 every time you want to drive out. There is regular security - Mario and Sergio who are both awesome too!! There is one flight of stairs going up from the garage to the ground floor level which has the hotel entrance/front desk with service, open 24/7. There is one more flight of stairs to go up to the rooms level. The hotel has a/c and a small fridge. They provide shampoo and soap but not hair conditioner. The cleaning staff was very accommodating. The other hotel option, Hacienda Los Algodones, we heard has ground level rooms, no stairs, parking is in an enclosed lot and patients go back and forth on a shuttle/van. The Giostar Health Center and Hotel Cielo Lindo are in a mini "MediPlaza" with a coffee shop, a smoothie cafe, a great restaurant, and a few small shops. Also, going into town was very easy, felt safe and was fun. There are tons of pharmacies and many of them have grocery stores within. We liked the grocery inside Liquis 2 Farmacia (Liquis Algodones 2) which was less than a 5-min walk from the MediPlaza. Liquis 2 has an atm with a $30 fee for a $200 withdrawal. We found other (HSBC) atms that would charge over $75.
